INTRODUCTION:

Two major problems associated with swine manure management in confinement systems are odors and solids. There are currently many products on the market claiming to reduce or control odors. Odor control chemicals can be grouped into one of four types; masking agents, counteractants, absorption chemicals, and enzymes. The problem with these products are that they treat the symptons (odors) without curing the problem (anaerobic decompostion). Bio-2000 is a bacterial product developed to treat the problem by effectively increasing facultative microbial digestion of waste, thereby reducing odors and solids. Bio-2000 is an effective and economical tool for odor and solids control in pits or lagoons.

PROBLEMS:

Solids

• sludge build-up due to inefficient microbial decomposition of solids
  • increases pumping frequency
  • decreases lagoon life
  • increases wear and tear on manure pumps when emptying pits.

Odors

• volatile fatty acids, amines, ammonia, sulfides, and mercaptans produced by anaerobic decompostion
• these noxious odors influence animal performance and employee comfort

SOLUTION:

Use the swine formulation of Bio-2000 to:

• Control odors by increasing facultative decomposition
• Decrease solids through more efficient decomposition

BENEFITS:

• Efficient solids digestion extends the life of your lagoon and reduces the frequency of pumping your pits.
• Less solids leads to easier pumping due to decreased viscosity (See Figure 1).
• Less volatile fatty acids mean fewer noxious odors (See Figure 2 and Table 1).
